Time Is the Real Currency

A Duck, a Coug, a Buff, and a Dawg walked into a bar this week. Four different schools, four different mascots, one table, and with Apple Cup and college football kicking off this weekend, the energy in the room already had an edge to it.

This week's theme was Time Is the Real Currency. Money comes and goes. You can always make more of it, replace it, recover from losing it. Time does not work that way, and once you sit with that, the question stops being how do I get more of it and starts being what am I actually doing with what I have.

A few things that stuck with me:

Delegation only works if you actually let go. One crew member's rule for training up the next generation is to answer a question with a question instead of handing over the answer. Slower in the moment, faster over time.

Face to face still beats automated. Another crew member made the case that AI is great at underwriting and paperwork, but it does nothing to build a relationship. Showing up in person is still the thing people remember.

Presence beats intention every time. Someone talked about getting called out by their own kids for being on the phone too much. Walking a nine year old to school for the first time became the moment that stuck, because it only happens once.

However old you are right now is the best you are ever going to be at this age. You only get to do it once, which changes how you think about the decade you keep telling yourself is coming later.

Good crew, good questions, and proof that the boat is not really the point. The conversation is.

The full edition of Heard This Week, with every takeaway from the boat, goes to the crew after each cruise.
